To apply for a Marriage/Civil Union License

Couples can apply for a license in Plainsboro Township if:
Either party resides in Plainsboro Township and the ceremony will take place in New Jersey.
  
OR

If neither party resides in New Jersey, but the ceremony is taking place in Plainsboro.

Couples must appear in person to the Municipal Center, Township Clerk’s Office, 641 Plainsboro Road during the hours of:

Monday 9:00 - 3:30
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 12:00 - 3:30
Friday 9:00 - 3:30

The couple must bring the following:

  1. One witness who is at least 18 years old
  2. Proof of residency (lease, mortgage, utility bill or valid NJ driver’s license)
  3. Original birth certificates with a raised seal or valid passports    
  4. If applicable, Original divorce papers with a raised seal, civil annulment documents or civil union dissolved/domestic partnership termination documents
  5. If applicable, Original death certificates for deceased spouse, civil union or domestic partner
  6. Social security numbers
  7. Name of the municipality in which the ceremony will take place ( the physical location, not the mailing address)
  8. Date of the ceremony
  9. Name and address of the person who is performing the ceremony
  10. Mothers’ maiden names  
  11. Place (State or Country) where parents were born

There is a $28 fee payable by Cash or Money Order at the time of the application.

There is a 72 hour State mandatory waiting period before the license can be picked up. Licenses are valid for 30 days from time of pick-up.

Note: Effective August, 1997, New Jersey no longer requires a blood test.
