  • Wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, and sturdy shoes/boots
  • Take your disaster supply kit and plan
  • Take medications with you
  • Account for all family members
  • Take your pets with you
  • Lock your home
  • Use travel routes specified by authorities
  • Stay away from downed power lines

 

emergency preparedness tips

  1. Keep car gas tank filled (gas pumps may not work if a power failure occurs)
  2. Maintain car in good working order
  3. Have some cash (ATM machines may not work if power failure occurs)
  4. Have a smaller emergency supply kit in car
  5. Teach family members how to use ABC fire extinguisher
  6. Teach family members how to shut off utilities
    • Locate the electric, gas and water shut off valves
    • Keep necessary tools near gas and water shut off valves
    • Make available written directions on each utility
    • If you turn the gas off, a professional must turn it back on. Do not attempt to do this yourself.
  7. Have family members attend CPR/First Aid courses
  8. Review insurance coverage, home and personal (photo inventory)
  9. Every 6 months, check expiration dates of your supplies
    • Replace any expired medications, food, or batteries
    • Replace water every 6 months
    • Replace clothing to appropriate size
  10. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in home
  11. Check all fire extinguishers annually
  12. Place supplies in easy to carry containers, preferably waterproof, such as: plastic totes, equipment bags, large duffle bags, or luggage
  13. Store emergency kit(s) off the floor, in a cool dry area, and away from overhead pluming.
