What is "Shelter in Place?"
To "Shelter in Place," is to seek immediate shelter and remain there during an emergency. Unless instructed to evacuate by emergency personnel, sheltering in a pre-determined safe location in your home or place of work is the preferred method of safely waiting out an emergency event.
How will people know if they need to "Shelter in Place?"
Notification will be made by local police, emergency coordinators, or government through:
- Radio or television
- Website(s)
- Loud speakers from police or fire trucks
- Middlesex County Emergency Notification System
- Call the Middlesex County Office of Emergency Management Rumor Control Line at 1-800-294-8001
How to "Shelter in Place?"
- Bring your family and pets inside
- Lock doors, close windows, air vents and fireplace dampers
- Turn off fans, air conditioning and forced air heating systems
- Get your emergency supply kit
- Have a battery powered radio with you
- Go to an interior room that's above ground level (preferably a room that does not have windows or has the least number of windows) and close the door
- 10 square feet of floor space per person to allow up to 5 hours of sufficient air
- Watch TV, listen to the radio or check the internet often for official news.
