The Great EGGsploration! That bunny everybody loves has been hopping through the trails here at the Preserve and has left a mess of eggs along the trail. We are hoping you can come help us by finding them and bringing them to the Nature Center. We will have a have a prize for you when you bring back the eggs. Picture Frame Planter Workshop: Saturday, April 1, 2023; 10:00-11:00am Add a little green to your walls with these living pieces of artwork! With instruction, you will build your own picture frame planter then pick from our selection of plants to create your own masterpiece. Registration and fee is "per build", not per family. Spring Break Eco Excursion: Join us as we head out into the Preserve for different eco-themed excursions while you enjoy your Spring Break this year! Plant & Seed Swap: Saturday, April 8, 2023; 10:00-11:30 am. Whether you’ve gotten really good at propagating your plants or you’re just looking to mix up your collection, bring over your healthy indoor houseplants to trade with other plant enthusiasts at this community event. Rooted cuttings and healthy plants only please. We will also have an area for seed swapping to get your outdoor gardens growing. Hershey Park Trip: Saturday, April 15, 2023. Families can enjoy a day of play at Hershey Park! Blanket the World with Kindness: Sunday, April 16, 2023; 3:00-5:00 pm. Would you like to learn how to make a simple no sew fleece blanket for a child in need or a shelter pet? We will be making single-ply fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus, which provides handmade blankets to children in need, and double-ply knotted fleece dog and cat blankets for local animal shelters. Museum Littles: Sunday, April 16 - June 18; 11:00am-12:00pm This program has different themes each week like little architect, little botanist and little linguist. This is a great introductory program for small children to the museum. It incorporates classical music, sensory activities and new topics perfect for this age group. Children will play games and do crafts related to the week’s themes. There will also be an active play center set up either indoors or outdoors each week. April Bird Walk with Scott Barnes: Wednesday, April 19, 2023; 9:00 - 11:00 am Join New Jersey Audubon Naturalist Scott Barnes as we explore Plainsboro Preserve looking for spring birds! Forest Eats and Wild Treats: Sunday, April 23, 2023; 1:00-2:30 pm Explore what’s on the menu in Plainsboro as we forage for a variety of native and edible plants. Join a Park System Naturalist as we learn to identify common wild edibles, their medicinal properties, and the uses of a number of other common plants that can be found right here in Plainsboro. Botanical Drawing: Thursday, May 18, 2023; 10:00-12:30 am. Before modern photography botanical illustrations were the only way for early botanists to capture and catalogue plant species for study. Join us in combining equal parts art and science as we begin the program on a guided hike through the scenic Plainsboro Preserve, collecting and describing plant species. Then we will bring our samples inside and learn the basics of drawing accurate depictions of each. No prior art or botany skills required. Please bring with you a 5”X 8” sketch pad or larger, vinyl eraser and basic set of sketch pencils (illustration pens optional). Hidden Stories of Nature Hike: Saturday, May 27, 2023; 10:00-11:30am While out in the woods many of us have come across oddities that made us ask questions like “why is this tree shaped like that, where did this little hill come from and why do all the small trees have scratches on them?” On this hike we will slow down and take a close look at these oddities, explain what causes them and reveal the stories of the forest that often go unnoticed and hidden. Free Film at the Preserve: "DRIFT" Documentary: Friday, June 9, 2023; 7:30-9:00pm Save Barnegat Bay is pleased to present their documentary film, DRIFT, in celebration of the organization’s 50th anniversary observed in 2021. The film was produced in collaboration with Monmouth University Production Services and directed by Erin Fleming and tells the story of Barnegat Bay through the voices and eyes of people who cherish the Bay as a natural, recreational, and economic resource for the local community and all of New Jersey.. Fungi Findings: Saturday, June 17, 2023; 11:00am - 12:00 pm The world of fungi and mushrooms is endlessly fascinating but learning how to identify them on your own can seem like a daunting task. Learn the broad families of fungi, parts of a mushroom, and key features used in identifying local mushroom species in this workshop designed for the first timer. Founders Day! This year Founders Day will be on Saturday, May 6th. We will enjoy amusement rides, super inflatables, crafts and games! The Wicoff House will be open for tours and showcasing brand new exhibits. All activities are free. The event will begin with our parade. Parade will kick off around noon at Edgemere Ave. with festivities officially starting at 1pm. The Municipal Grounds are located at 641 Plainsboro Road Plainsboro, NJ 08536.
