1. When should I replace my smoke alarm?

2. Why is my smoke alarm is "chirping"?

A "chirping" smoke alarm is an alert that the battery in the alarm needs to be replaced or the alarm is defective and may need to be replaced. Click here to find out more information on smoke alarms.

3. When should I change the batteries in my smoke alarm?

You should change the batteries in your smoke alarm at least twice per year.  Also, you should test your smoke alarm weekly to make sure it still sounds. Click here to find out more information on smoke alarms.

4. Do I need a permit to put up a tent?

A permit may be required if the tent is greater than 900 square feet, or more than 30 feet in any dimension, or if cooking with an open flame under it.

5. I received a fire code violation and do not understand the violations. Who can I call?

The name of the inspector is on the front sheet of the violation paperwork. Call our office at 609-799-0909, ext. 1203 to speak with an inspector.

6. The Inspector came at a busy time. Can I request a convenient time for him/her to return?

Yes. Explain to the inspector that it is not a good time to conduct the inspection and come to a mutually agreeable time that will work for everyone.

7. What can I expect from a fire inspection?

The inspector will need access to the entire property. A representative may be requested to accompany the inspector to provide access to locked areas. When violations are found, they will be noted and explained. Adequate time will be given to correct the violations before another inspection occurs.

8. How often are commercial fire inspections performed?

Every occupancy is inspected at least once during the calendar year.  Some occupancies require semi-annual or annual fire inspections.
