Outdoor recreational fires, such as those set in a fire pit or outdoor fireplace are permitted in New Jersey with the following rules and requirements:
- Recreational fires must be less than 3 feet in diameter and less than 2 feet in height
- Recreational fires must be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished
- A fire extinguisher with a 4A rating, garden hose, dirt, sand, etc. are acceptable for extinguishing the fire
- Recreational fires cannot be used for waste (garbage, leaves, grass clippings etc.) disposal purposes
- Recreational fires, in an approved container (such as a chimenea or fire pit), must be located at least 15 feet away from any structure
- Recreational fires that are not contained in an approved container must be located at least 25 feet from any structure
- Open burning is prohibited when atmospheric conditions make such fires hazardous
Any recreational outdoor fire that exceeds 3’x2’ is considered a bonfire and requires a fire permit and inspection from the Plainsboro Township Fire Marshal.
