Jim Jeffers (left) and Mayor Peter Cantu (right), are pictured with a mural that was recently installed at the township municipal building. The mural was donated to the township by Jim Jeffers, a long-time resident, farmer and businessman of Plainsboro and great grandson of Henry W. Jeffers, owner of Walker Gordon Laboratories Company (Walker Gordon Farm Dairy). Located in Plainsboro from 1897 – 1971, the farm was known throughout the country for producing the highest quality raw milk, and milk products. In fact, it was a favorite of President Franklin D. Roosevelt!
The mural was designed by Herman Carl Mueller, founder of Mueller Mosaic Company of Trenton. The work was commissioned by Henry W. Jeffers in 1929 to illustrate a series of 15 colored murals, depicting various phases of bovine history. The mural was completed in 1930 and placed in the Walker Gordon Farm Rotolactor building for visitors to see. Each series of tiles measures 33” in height by 96” in length. Mueller used a durable, glazed tile, that was easy to clean and would not deteriorate under extreme conditions and moisture.
Jim Jeffers donated four murals to Plainsboro. The remaining three will be hung in other municipal locations. The township thanks the Jeffers family for their generosity in preserving and sharing this important part of Plainsboro’s history.
