[ARCHIVED] New Jersey Expands Move Over Law

Move over

Effective May 1st, New Jersey’s Move Over Law was broadened to include emergency service vehicles, roadway maintenance vehicles, stationary tow trucks and stationary sanitation vehicles.

When approaching a vehicle that is displaying flashing red, blue and/or amber lights, the law requires drivers to change lanes, if safely possible.  If a lane change is not possible, is prohibited by law or is in any way unsafe, drivers are required to slow down to a rate of speed that is lower than the posted speed limit and be prepared to stop.

It is important for drivers to understand that regardless of whether roadside workers are providing aid, performing repairs or simply removing trash – they are focused on the task at hand and may not be able to watch traffic.
